L'Agulhas Adventure - The Hangnes Outspan

Visiting the Cape Agulhas area is always an adventure. When driving through the beautiful town of L’Agulhas, visitors look forward to climbing the lighthouse and posing for a photo at the southernmost tip Africa. Few know about another little gem called the Hangnes Outspan.  Here you will find a water trough, a stone structure, and plaque with the following inscription:

WATERKRIP

WATER TROUGH

The farm “ Zoetendals Vallei” formerly stretched right down to the coast to the point where L’Agulhas is today.  Flocks of sheep wandered at certain times of the year to this point and the water trough was used to water the sheep.  Just above this point is a spring which used to feed the trough. Transport riders and holidaymakers stopped here to water their livestock.  This stopover was known as the Hangnes Outspan.
